Abstract:
The purpose of this Capstone is to demonstrate the effectiveness of state government incentives and mandates in the adoption of renewable energy technology. Using the State of Hawaii as a case study, I will discuss the State of Hawaii’s emphasis on energy efficiency, renewable energy, distributed generation, and traditional fossil fuel generation. In this Capstone I will demonstrate how policy can be designed to speed the adoption process for emerging technology. I will document previous research on how renewable energy advocates frame the energy problem to enter and affect the policy process. The results of this Capstone will include an evaluation of existing policy and show why some policies have achieved impressive results, and others have failed. I will then provide recommendations for additional policies that when put in place, will speed the use of Renewables in the State of Hawaii.
