This project involves implementing an environmental management system (EMS) at Hayden Station, a coal-fired power plant. An EMS is a program that incorporates all environmental issues, including compliance and pollution prevention into one system. The process of developing an EMS and implementing it challenges a facility to strive for sustainability, which often results in process improvements at the facility. An important component of the EMS at Hayden Station is that it will incorporate the ideas of both external and internal stakeholders. This is especially important for Hayden because the plant's reputation with the community is less than perfect. The goals of this project are to achieve excellent environmental compliance and stakeholder satisfaction. This power plant is one of many in a larger corporation, Xcel Energy. If this EMS project proves to be more beneficial than existing environmental programs, it could be implemented at other plants in the company.
