Abstract:
The energy metering technology used presently in India is not highly reliable and requires substantial labor and time to create and distribute bills. Although the existing “pre-paid energy meter” system has solved problems such as errors made reading meters and processing bills (Loss,1998), it has disadvantages. The main disadvantage is recharging the energy meter. Distribution company (TRANSCO) employees must go to the consumer units to recharge the meters, which is a tedious process. Also, since there is no communication between the distribution company and consumer units, the current system cannot detect power theft which is common in countries like India. This project proposes a redesign of pre-paid energy meters to support wireless recharge of electricity units and detection of power theft.
