Abstract:
Between Two Yards: A Collection of Short Stories and Essays is a collection of stories and essays that centers on the theme of fear. Fear is a ubiquitous emotion that extends across cultures, is connected to innumerable experiences, and takes form in extreme variations. This collection includes characters that are forced into situations that provoke subtle, common, or irrational anxiety. Each piece exposes details of the fear-inducing scenario, explores the ways that individuals ignore or confront the particular fear itself, shows the consequences of the particular fear, and demonstrates whether the individuals are capable of overcoming it. Also included is an introduction that covers the biological and psychological aspects of fear, theories of coping strategies, how the research on fear influenced the stories and essays in this collection, and commentary on authors who have also either intentionally or subconsciously used fear in their writing.
